Namib Naukluft Park, Namibia
In the Nama language, 'Namib' means 'vast or open space' giving rise the the countries name, Namibia, meaning 'land of vast open space'. The Namib Naukluft Park is a combination of the Namib Desert Park and the Naukluft Mountain Zebra Park including parts of the Diamond Areas and is one of the least populated areas in the country where you will get to experience an intense feeling of vastness and isolation. The night skies here magical, dancing and inspiring like very few skies can be.
The Namib-Naukluft Park is Namibia's most versatile conservation area and one of the largest national parks in Africa ensuring it a place as Namibia's major tourist destination. The vast wilderness of almost 50 000 square km contains key features and attractions such as Sossusvlei, Sesriem, the Welwitschia Trail, Sandwich Harbour, the Naukluft Mountains and the Kuiseb Canyon.
Sossusvlei, with its monumental dunes in excess of 300m, are the tallest in the world. With time standing still, it can only be measured in the dunes color. Over time the dunes develop an orange color from the oxidised iron in the sand making the brightest colored dunes the eldest.The Deadvlei or Pan is a large erie expanse of dried white clay, punctuated by skeletons of ancient camel-thorn trees, carbon-dated to be 500 and 600 years old.
Wildlife in the Namib Naukluft Park include the Hartmann's mountain zebra, kudu, gemsbok, steenbok, leopard, baboon, klipspringer, duiker, black-backed jackal, bat-eared fox, African wild cat, caracal, aardwolf and Black eagles. Up to 200 other bird species have been found in the area. Some of the favorite activities include the Naukluft hiking and four wheel drive trails.
