NamibRand Nature Reserve, Namibia

Spotted Eagle OwlThe NamibRand Private Nature Reserve (established in 1984), is located in southern Namibia, was established to protect and conserve the unique ecology and wildlife in the south-west Namib Desert. The NamibRand Nature Reserve is probably the largest private nature reserve in Southern Africa, extending over an area of 172,200 ha and sharing a 100km border with the Namib-Naukluft National Park in the west, bordered in the east by the Nubib Mountains and close to Sossusvlei. The reserve's unique location offers a diversity of desert landscapes.

 

Due to the intent of the reserve, every guest staying in the NamibRand Private Nature Reserve contributes towards the conservation of NamibRand by simply staying there. This is done to create sustainable eco-tourism. It has been decided that every bed, must be surrounded by 2000 hectares of wilderness. Luxury accommodations are thus used to sustain a part of the reserves income.

 

There are four distinct habitats are found on the Reserve: dunes and sandy plains, inselbergs and mountains, gravel plains, and sand and gravel plains interface. The predominant large mammals on the Reserve are gemsbok or oryx, springbok, kudu, Hartman's and Burchell's zebra, giraffe, klipspringer, steenbok, hartebeest, baboon, leopard, spotted and brown hyena, black-backed jackal, aardwolf, bat-eared fox, Cape fox, African wildcat, caracal, genet and more than 150 bird species have been identified.
