The Kalahari Desert holds a mystery that draws you in; the more you discover about the arid plains of the Northern Cape, the more you'll want to know. The plant and animal diversity is surprisingly rich, as the Northern Cape is made up of the Kalahari Desert and the Namaqualand, which is famous for its colourful fields of wildflowers. The skies are azure blue all year round and the sun is harsh and white, but the weather could rollercoaster between 40ºC in summer and -5ºC in winter.
The biggest town is Kimberley and here the historical tourist attractions are bountiful, including the Big Hole, the remains of the diamond mines and the various Anglo-Boer War battlefields. For the adventurous spirit, there are 4x4 trails to suit every whim, from knee-buckling to mildly shaken! The Victorian architecture in most of the quaint towns is soft on the eye, and there are various historical tours one could undertake. The Northern Cape is truly a diamond in the rough, waiting for discovery.
The accommodation is superb, with a wide array of hotels, luxury guest houses and private safari lodges to choose from.
